Judges

NAWGJ CT information, becoming a judge, assigning, and committee resources.

NAWGJ Mission Statement

It is the mission of the National Association of Women Gymnastic Judges to provide professional development for its members and to support and promote women's gymnastics in the United States.

  • Providing the membership with education, communication, and representation.
  • Contracting officials to various organizations with gymnastics programs upon request.
  • Providing other services to the gymnastics community.

Become a Judge

Connecticut is very interested in increasing the number of gymnastics officials in the state. Former gymnasts and coaches are particularly well suited to judging due to their understanding of the sport, its specific skills, and execution expectations.

New judges normally start with a Level 4/5 Compulsory rating, which is a written multiple-choice exam based on general knowledge of Levels 4 and 5 compulsory routines and their deductions. Preliminary study aids needed are the J.O. Compulsory Book along with any subsequent changes and clarifications. There are three compulsory items available for purchase on the USAG online store: the book, a CD with floor routine music, and a DVD of the routines.

The introductory course and exam for new judges is conducted each summer. If you are interested, send an email to ctnawgj@gmail.com so we will have your name and contact information when the course schedule is determined. The course usually consists of clinics once a week for a month, followed by two walk-through sessions.

Once an aspiring judge passes the exam, NAWGJ-CT has an established mentoring network to provide assistance to newly rated officials.

Aspiring judges can also choose to test in at Level 7/8. To prepare for this entry-level optional exam, you will need the J.O. Code of Points (2022-2026), along with any subsequent additions, clarifications, or changes.

There are also a number of judging resources available to download on the USAG (technical online store) or NAWGJ.org website.

CT Assigning

All judges must have current memberships to USA Gymnastics and NAWGJ to be assigned, as well as being current with their background check, safety certification, CPE, and SafeSport requirements.

High school judges must belong to NAWGJ and CIAC.

Local meets are assigned in two seasons: fall and winter/spring. The assignor fills openings for all local and in-state invitationals from the available judges per their returned availability in the Arbiter assigning system. Levels and ratings are taken into consideration. If a judge subsequently cannot do a meet after contracting to do so, it is their obligation to notify the assignor immediately.

If you have any questions on assigning, please use: ctnawgjassigner@gmail.com

CT Selection Procedures for State Meets

Starting with the 2020 season, all CT USAG professional members are polled for their input on who they would like to have judge the CT State Championship meets. These votes are compiled and presented to the state administrative committee for further action and assignments.

Judges Recommendations to Regionals

The state committee will recommend judges to the RTC by August 5th of the competitive year. The state administrative committee welcomes input from all professional members.
